-Trivino, Sarah Joy D.

LOS BANOS, LAGUNA-The Los Baños Municipal Environment and Natural Resources Office (LB MENRO) reported 80% decrease in garbage disposal in 2010 and from 2011 to 2012, approximately 30% decrease in the number of violators.

According to Ms. Agnes Umali, a MENRO staff, this resulted after the anti-plastic ordinance was implemented in 2008.

As of January 2013, 31.43 metric tons of garbage are collected around LB per day.

For the past two years of implementation, approximately Php 12, 000 was collected from the violators as fines. This will be added to the environmental fund of the local government.

Several other establishments, however, do not abide and still have outstanding fees to pay. Unpaid accounts are estimated to total to Php 28,000.

Ms. Umali also said that a business establishment with remaining balance will not be issued the renewal of their business permits.

The banning of plastic is under the Municipal Ordinance 2008-752.
